The Werdmuller Building is an iconic building located on a city block in the suburb of Claremont in Cape Town. This modernist building was designed by architect Roelof Uitenbogaardt in the 1960’s and named after former Old Mutual chairperson George Werdmuller.
Approval has been obtained after a 4-year process from Heritage for part demolition. Planning has been ramped up to finalise the design to suit its surrounds and provide a better commercial offering. The building will undergo significant redevelopment, transforming it into a modern mixed-use development called “The Neo” of 30,000m² GLA. It is the first tall building at 64m approved for build in Claremont. The goal will be to preserve some of the existing modernist design features of parts of the building while also updating it to meet modern standards and offer a variety of uses.
The Neo will offers a mix of retail, office, and residential space with stunning views of the Mountains and surrounding area. The ground floor of the building will feature a retail arcade, that will offer a range of shops, food outlets.
The upper floors of the building will be converted into modern office space, with open-plan layouts, high ceilings, and large windows that offer plenty of natural light and residential units.
Refurbishment is set to start in 2024.
